Baby carrier buying guide

While facing so many options, it can be challenging to know which one will suit you more. If you are facing such difficulty right now, read the following tips to help you choose the best baby carrier. I promise you’ll know precisely which carrier to pick from this list in the next couple of minutes.

What is the distinction between the different types of baby carriers?

First, let’s go over the fundamentals; know the difference between a baby carrier vs. wrap vs. sling vs. a backpack. On the other hand, if you already know the distinction, skip to the next section.

Soft-structured baby carrier

The soft-structured baby carrier is trendy right now in America and Europe. Your friend or cousin who just got a baby, probably owns this kind of carrier.

These baby carriers are designed to be ergonomic and safe for all sizes of children. Because of the various adjustable straps, you can transport your newborn in a safe and comfy position on your chest, while also being able to have your toddler seated up-right and facing-forward.

These all-in-one convertible carriers also have the extra padding and support to distribute your baby’s weight to your shoulders and hips.

Baby carrier wraps

Basically, a baby wrap is a very long piece of fabric, use to wrap your baby around your torso.

Mothers from around the world have been carrying their children in such ways for hundreds of years. The baby wrap is the most simple and effective solution to transport your baby.

This kind of baby carrier doesn’t offer special padding or support. However, with practice, you can learn how to tie the wrap comfortably.

Baby sling

The baby sling is very similar to the baby wrap, as it’s also a long piece of fabric used to wrap your baby. However, the difference is in the tying method. The baby sling as a large metal ring used to fasten both ends of the wrap. Also, because if the metal ring, some parents find this option to be more stylish than a regular baby wrap.

Mei Tai carrier

The Mei Tai carrier is a hybrid version of the soft-structured carrier and a wrap. Basically, it’s a soft-structured carrier without the buckles and clips. To fasten the Mei Tai carrier, you simply tie it around your waist (like a wrap carrier.)

Backpack baby carrier

This option of the baby carrier was created for the outdoor amateurs who needed a more comfortable alternative to carry their children along their next adventure.

This type of baby carrier is worn like a regular backpack, where the kid is seated upright and facing forward. It is very comfortable for both the child and the wearer. The interior of the bag is also called the cockpit, and it’s wholly padded for maximum comfort. Also, the wearer will appreciate the extra padding on the shoulder, and straps that support a proper weight distribution across the upper-body.

Compare to the other kind of carrier, this one is not suitable for a newborn as your baby will not have the nessecery neck muscles to hold his head safely. Plus, you won’t be able to see your child and respond to his need without having to take off the backpack.

I would advise you to get this kind of carrier only if your child is older than 6 months. The extra dollars you spend on this kind of carrier is worth it only if you plan to hike or go sightseeing for long hours (even days).

How to choose the right carrier for you?

When choosing a baby carrier, you MUST consider the followings factors:

How old is your kid?

If you have a newborn at home, or if you are pregnant right now, there’s a high chance you’ll need a safe baby carrier for a newborn.

Therefore, you must check the weight limitation of the carrier. Most carriers (except the backpack) can accommodate a 7-8 pounds baby, which is enough for almost every newborn.

However, some soft-structured baby carriers required to add an infant insert for newborns. These extra layers of materials become useless after your kid reaches a certain weight.

On the other hand, if you have an older child or if you are planning to use the carrier for many years, check the maximum weight limit of the carrier. Most carriers have a 35-45 pounds limit (4 years old), which is more than enough.

The age of your kid will also greatly influence the position in which you will carry him/her. Newborns are carried on your chest in an inward-facing position (with the legs and arms tuck-in). After 6 months, you begin to explore the facing-outward position and the back carry.

In my opinion, the best carrier is evolutive and versatile to a point where you only have to buy one baby carrier (without needing a special insert).

Every baby carriers in this list are safe for a newborn (except the backpack), and still safe for a grown-up child.

What features to look for in a baby carrier?

Ergonomics

Your baby’s health should be the top priority. Therefore, the ergonomic of the baby carrier is the first thing to consider.

The position of your child in the carrier can affect the development of the hips and back. The International Hip Dysplasia InstituteOpens in a new tab. has issued warning against non-ergonomics carriers who could be the cause of hip dysplasia. This is especially critical for newborns and young infants.

The position of a newborn inside the carrier should provide a proper curvature of the baby’s spine. This is also referred to as the “C” shape spine alignment. Such a position avoids putting pressure on your baby’s spine and hips. With his legs and arms tuck-in, your newborn will remain safe.

Also, for the first 3 months, at least, the carrier must support the baby by his buttocks and hamstrings. The legs are supported to the knees, and only the feet are coming out on the side. Called the “frog” or the “M” shape position, it’s crucial to choose a baby carrier with that kind of support.

The best baby carrier is not only ergonomic for the baby, but also for the parents or wearer. To be considered ergonomics, a baby carrier must have the proper straps and waistband to distribute the weights off your shoulders. Otherwise, you might develop back pain as your baby become heavier.

Size of the leg holes

The size of the leg holes should be adjustable or small enough so your newborn won’t slip off the carrier. Some baby carriers were not made to use without an infant insert, or they are simply not intended for newborns. You must be careful about this.

Versatility

A suitable baby carrier should be adjustable to your growing child. Baby carriers can be expensive, and you shouldn’t have to buy more than one to accommodate your kid.

As your newborn turns into a walking toddler, you’ll want to modify the carrying position. At least, you’ll want to switch from inward-facing to outward-facing. However, I recommend getting the carrier that will also allow you to carry your child backpack style. Furthermore, some carriers also allow hip or side carry (which become very useful for the parents.)

Look for the carrier that as a wide range of weight limits (ex: 7 to 40 pounds), from which you’ll get more for your money.

Safety & reliability

Safety is the number one factor to consider, so here are additional manufacturing details you must analyze.

A suitable baby carrier will resist over time by using well-stitched and solid materials. Moreover, you’ll want the best fasteners possible (buckles, adjustment slides, loop, rings). Low-quality clips or loops could result in a severe accident.

This is why I recommend being extra-careful if you opt for the ring sling. Such baby carriers can be very safe, but because of the way it’s fastened, it’s easier to commit an error.

On the other hand, whichever baby carrier you choose, you should always double-check everything before taking your hands off your baby. This is why I particularly like the Smart Safety Click System from the BabyBjorn carrier. They have that extra level of security we could need, especially after a bad night or a stressful day at work.

Comfort

After safety, comfort is the second most vital factor to determine if a baby carrier is worth it. A suitable baby carrier will have the necessary padding and cushions that make babywearing an enjoyable experience for you and your baby.

It’s especially crucial with the soft-structured carrier and baby backpack. Padding should be added wherever the carrier structure is in contact with your baby’s delicate skin. For example, bum, back, legs, and headrest, but also around the straps and buckles.

Padded headrest

Newborn babies don’t have the proper neck muscles to hold their heads, and therefore the carrier must have a padded headrest for extra support.

Support

The baby carrier must also be comfortable for the wearer. For which, the padding on the shoulder straps, and waist belt become very useful. In my experience, without the proper support and weight distribution, after hours of carrying your toddler, you are at risk of developing severe back pain.

Breathability

The comfort of a baby carrier is also significantly linked to the breathability of the materials. Your baby won’t like the experience, if, during a hot summer day, the carrier turned into a blazing oven. If you live in an exceptionally warm region of the planet, make sure; the fabric is light enough, that no infant insert is required, and no padding is blocking the proper airflow inside the carrier.

Ease of use

You love the design and style of the baby carrier you’re about to buy, but is it so difficult to adjust that you’ll end up not using it? Some manufacturers put all their money on marketing and neglect the convenience and ease of use of their carrier.

The baby carriers in this list have been tested first hand by my self, plus I have read every single review I could find on the web. This way, I’m sure that you’ll have a great experience with the baby carrier.

Straps, fasteners, and loops

You can judge the efficiency of a baby carrier by how quickly you’ll learn how to fasten and secure your baby. If it takes an engineering degree to use the carrier, you could be putting your baby at risk of a misused of the carrier.

Straps and buckles carriers should be easily maneuverable with one hand, while with the other, you are holding your baby. The straps should feel comfortable and not like it’s trying to cut through your skin. They also should stay in place safely without any chance of slipping or unclipping.

Wraps, Mei Tai, and baby sling should have enough length of fabric to tie the carrier safely. If you run short on fabric, you won’t be able to create a safe knot or loop.

Material

The materials much determine the breathability, comfort, safety, and longevity of the baby carrier. In general, you’ll find cotton or polyester used by the manufacturer. However, some brand offers organic fabric that is softer and more robust. Moreover, some baby carriers are made of anti-allergic materials.

The most important property of the materials is smoothness because you want to avoid baby carriers that are too rough and can irritate the skin.

Attachable hood

This extra feature is not mandatory, but if you plan on walking under the sun (or the rain), an attachable hood becomes very handy. My carrier had a flexible hood that could be roll-up and became a headrest for my baby. It’s way more convenient than putting a hat on your baby’s head!

Cleaning

Kids, especially babies, can be messy, and believe me, that a machine washable carrier is not a feature you can skip!

Cost

In general, I would put the cost on top of my priorities when I’m shopping. However, when it comes to a baby carrier, safety depends on the quality of the product, so I won’t solely opt for the cheapest option.

On the other hand, it’s possible to get an excellent carrier for under $50. But depending on the model you prefer, you could pay up to $250. The brand name, design, versatility, quality, and extra features are adding up to the cost.

Takeaway

In the last years, the manufacturers have improved their baby carrier, and BabyBjorn is still among the best options. I have personally used the BabyBjorn Orginal baby carrier for years, and past it to my friends who are using it today. I have put my trust in their product, and I’m glad I did. I was able to accomplish so much around the house while carrying my babies. Plus, we went on so many adventures for grocery shopping or hitting the trails on the weekends!

If you are thinking about getting BabyBjorn Orginal baby carrier, stop overthinking and buy it today on Amazon for a reasonable price.

On the other hand, after researching for hours to create this article, I discover the new Ergobaby Omni 360. It checks all boxes from my checklist of an excellent baby carrier, just like my BabyBrorn, but for the extra support, I would buy the Ergobaby Omni 360. Moreover, I really like the different styles, especially this awesome design.

Maybe, you’ll opt for the wrap, ring sling, or Meh Dai carrier (Mei Tai), and you won’t regret if you pick one from this list.

Every baby carrier from this list has proven to be the best of their category.
